"Joseph DeLappe's Dead-in-Iraq is an ongoing online gaming performance piece, in which he redefines the use of the free web-based game America's Army that the US military created as a recruiting tool for teenagers. DeLappe logs in as a player and utilizes the instant messaging element of the game to input the names of US soldiers who have lost their lives in the Iraq war. It first and foremost functions as a memorial that is continuously updated to reflect the most recent casualties of the war. This work is a way to begin the seemingly endless process of honoring the soldiers, while presenting a critique of the military's methods of recruitment in particular and the war in general."
