I have been a full-time, professional artist for over thirty years. In fact, I just sold five paintings in the last five days.
The answer to your question is "NO."
In my experience, people think of you the way they want to think of you... which is not necessarily the way you really are.
For example, my parents are still waiting for me to get "a real job." And, often when I tell people I am an artist, as I hand them my business card, they say "Oh, I'm an artist too. I paint ________ "(fill in the blank with actual things people have told me: fish on water barrels, roses on metal trays, ghosts, like Bob Ross).
On the other hand, many people around the world think I am an artist because they have bought my work... so you figure that out!
If you create original artworks, you are an artist. Don't sweat what people think.
