.... "wood grain:
moire patterns: intersection of regular "patterns" with one another
something about the "projection" of three-dimensional shapes onto 2-dimensional surfaces rather mimics the same topographic 'space'.
(for me, it's a bit hard to "put into words" unless you will accept a fair amount of mathematical structuring ... which removes most folks from the arena of "willingness to make the effort" .... or else devolves into verbal "hand-waving")
