one of my friends grew up in africa. that was because his parents
belonged to the salvation army and they were sent there as
"missionaries". i just used scare quotes. he can speak some african
language which i can't understand either. they built a school from
scratch - they'd gone there with nothing except goodwill. the school got
burnt down and they were hunted away
the guns were pointed at them
when some local war broke out.
that's why my friend was sent back to a boarding school in australia when he
was about 12. his parents went back and re built the school after the
war died down a bit. they relied on donations.
