" We are friends to everyone"

winter

It was a time of transition - but then again, the Macedonians had always been in transition. People feel that changes are out of their hands. Everyone seemed to be waiting for something to improve their situation.

Although the borders of Macedonia have been shrinking through the centuries, the people are very kind and
peace loving
They would prefer not to fight.

In fact, Macedonia is the only country to have gained independance from Yugoslavia without bloodshed -
And they are still friends.

They were worried about the rising population of ethnic Albanians, but they opened their borders anyway. Their doors were open to the refugees in need from Kosovo - both the Kosovar Albanians and the Serbs from Kosovo.

The ethnic Albanians she met all seemed friendly, though reserved. They were the shopkeepers in the Charshya section of the city. It was unfortunate that she couldn't speak Albanian.

She woke up every morning at sunrise to the call to prayer from the minarets. The same nasal song rang out from the mosques several times each day.
